I listened to it half-baked three times. Then I sat up and did it properly another three.
What I thought I was hunting for never arrived. That’s the point.
Two men talking. No sermon. No victory lap. Just curiosity with the volume turned down and the ego left in another room. Questions. Pauses. Those little “open air quotes” people use when they’re still testing an idea rather than nailing it to the wall.
Rob doesn’t try to flatten Don. Don doesn’t try to convert Rob. They just keep walking around the thing — Richard Owen, the word “dinosaur,” the photographs that never quite show the monster, the industry that grew up around the gap — and they leave the air in the room.
That’s rare. Most conversations now are two people taking turns to load the same gun. This one is two blokes standing in a field pointing at the same odd-shaped stone and asking “what do you actually see?”
I didn’t get the tidy conclusion I thought I wanted. I got something better: proof that two reasonably adult minds can still do the old thing. Look. Ask. Leave space.
